Blue stain is seasonal and affects the color of freshly sawn boards causing a swirl of blue discoloration in White Pine. This occurrence most often happens during the spring, summer, and early fall months when freshly sawn boards are exposed to the open moist warm air. As a result, the supply of blue stain is limited.
Not all blue stain coloration is blue, with shades ranging from blue to bluish black, gray, or brown and may even appear red, yellow, orange, purple. Although the stain is caused by a fungus, it is not mold and poses no health risks.
Blue stain has no effect on the strength of the lumber and can be used for the same purposes as non-stained lumber. Typically, folks want blue stain products in tongue & groove or shiplap siding that can be used for walls and/or ceilings. It may also be used for trim.
We recommend to clear coat it for interior use, to protect the product and allow you to see the beautiful natural colors. If you stain it, the natural colors may no longer be visible. When using blue stain products outdoors, you may go with a “natural” stain color.
